Texas Tech Golfers Fall to 27th in Championships
The Texas Tech men’s golf team shot a 17-over par 305 Saturday at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, Fla., falling to 27th place.
The Top 15 teams advanced to the match play round, meaning the Red Raiders have a steep hill to climb Sunday to advance in the tournament.
"We're going to have to be fairly aggressive (Sunday) in order to make a move," said Tech Head Coach Greg Sands. "We've got to put together almost a perfect round. Maybe not perfect all the way around, but certainly going to have to play really good."
Freshman Wes Artac carder the best effort for the Red Raiders Saturday shooting a 3-over 75.
The Red Raiders will enter Sunday’s round 15 stokes out of 15th position. The best round recorded at the Concession during the eight days of both the men’s and women’s national tournaments is 4-under by the Vanderbilt men.
"We're not going to give up," said Sands. "If you do, you're already beaten. I think the guys are going to come out and respond well (Sunday)."
An extraordinary comeback would not be a first for the Red Raiders.
In 2010, Tech entered the third round of the tournament in 20th place. But led by Chris Ward and Matt Smith, who shot 5-under par 67’s, the Red Raiders shot an 8-under 270 to climb all the way to seventh in the standings.
Tech would eventually fall to Florida State 4-1 in the quarterfinals.
