Alan Bowman Gets National Honor After Monster Game
Alan Bowman has solidified his name atop the Texas Tech depth chart, allegedly, after throwing for 605 yards and 5 touchdowns against a capable Houston defense. In the post-game press conference, Kliff Kingsbury maintained that he has three quarterbacks that can lead the team, "I've said it from day one I felt like we have three capable quarterbacks, that's a good problem to have." Kingsbury continued saying Bowman, "has some intangibles."
Intangibles. I think that's fairly certain.
Those intangibles lead Bowman to win an award that hasn't been secured by a Texas Tech player since Seth Doege in 2011. The Walter Camp National Player of the Week. The Walter Camp write up included this note, "True freshman Alan Bowman completed 43-of-59 passes for 605 yards and five touchdowns as Texas Tech defeated Houston, 63-49. Bowman’s 605 passing yards set a Big 12 record for freshmen." That record belonged to Patrick Mahomes who set the record against Baylor in a loss.
Here is the throw that broke Patrick's record:
What's even more impressive is that Alan Bowman played mistake-free football. He missed a few receivers early, but there were no bad sacks, only one total, and he has yet to throw an interception. To put that into perspective, Bowman has 133 pass attempts with 8 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Say what you want about Lamar's pass rush, the Houston Cougars have an all-world defensive tackle and Big 12 talent on the defensive line and Alan Bowman's jersey was clean at the end of the game.
That is great, quick, decision making from the true freshman and outstanding play from the Texas Tech big uglies. An offensive line that was playing most of the game with two backups in the trenches dominated the game and share responsibility for Bowman's record and Walter Camp honor. They also blocked for a 100-yard rusher who ran for four touchdowns. Another true freshman Ta'Zhawn Henry.
I think the bottom line here is that Alan Bowman had an outstanding day and he will continue to have outstanding days behind an offensive line that is gaining confidence and a running game that now has 13 touchdowns through three games.
