Texas Tech Red Raider Softball (1-0)defeated the San Diego State Aztecs (0-1) 5-4 Thursday afternoon to open their season at the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ. This was the fourth consecutive season for the Red Raiders to win their season opener.

Junior Infielder Sandy James led off the scoring for the Red Raiders with a solo home run in the top of the 2nd inning and San Diego State rallied in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Aztec Lorena Klopp. Melisa Ryba hit a solo home run for Tech in the 3rd inning, but the Aztecs rallied to take a 4-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

James would cut the SDSU lead in half in the top of the 4th with another solo home run and in the next inning Mikey Kenney hit an RBI single to tie the game for Tech. Ryba would drive in the winning run in the 6th for the victory as Texas Tech reliever Cara Custer threw five innings of relief earning the victory.

Texas Tech will next play Northwestern Friday afternoon at 12:30pm Central time.
