After the Kansas Jayhawks mutually parted ways with head coach Les Miles after allegations surfaced tracing all the way back to his former job at LSU, the Jayhawks Athletic Director Jeff Long announced that the Jayhawks would hire an outside firm to hire the next Kansas head football coach.

Then Jeff Long was let go.

Now, the Jayhawks look toward the inside to lead their team through the Spring and lead recruiting efforts through this uncertain and difficult time. The Jayhawks needed somebody off of their current staff who exemplifies leadership and is an excellent recruiter. In my opinion, there was an obvious in the room and to my amazement, the athletic department made the right choice.

The new interim head coach for Kansas is former Red Raider coach Emmett Jones.

When Kliff Kingsbury was fired after the 2018 season I begged Matt Wells via public channels like my radio show and Twitter account to retain Emmett Jones. He was the best recruiter on the previous staff, and at times it seemed like he was the only recruiter. Wells opted at the time to bring his receivers coach from Utah State, who then went to Oregon and eventually Joel Filani landed as the Red Raiders receivers coach.

I love Joel Filani. I've always wished Wells had found a way to keep Emmett Jones though.

Jones quickly landed at Kansas with the Jayhawks and took several Red Raider recruits with him to Lawrence. That was in 2018 and now he's getting his shot to lead the program.

Jones' head coach while at Texas Tech applauded the move from Kansas saying, "Jones' reputation as a tremendous coach is well established and well deserved. I was able to see that firsthand working with him at Texas Tech." Kingsbury listed his best assets then finished, "More than anything he brings a passion and level of integrity every day that is truly special.

I agree with everything that Kliff Kingsbury said, but I'll take it a step further.

Kansas needs to strip the interim tag and make Emmett Jones the head coach. If you truly think that the program was heading in the right direction under Les Miles, keep the staff intact and let Emmett Jones continue to improve your recruiting and offense.

I've advocated for the Jayhawks to go call Jeff Monken or Deion Sanders, for wildly different reasons, but there's nothing that those two men can do, that Emmett Jones shouldn't first have a chance to do. If they come in they'll succeed with Jones' talent anyways.
