Looking to make a splash and to resuscitate its floundering football program, the University of Kansas has hired former Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis.

Weis will be introduced at a news conference Friday in Lawrence where he will try to rebuild a program that hit rock bottom under Turner Gill, who was 5-19 in 2 seasons at the helm of the Jayhawk program.

Weis is finishing his first season with Florida as offensive coordinator and spent a season in the NFL as Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2010.

The 55-year-old former New England Patriots assistant has also spent time with the New York Jets and New York Giants, but has his only head coaching experience at Notre Dame where he spent 5 seasons with a 35-27 record.

Kansas looks to rejuvenate their program after a successful run under former coach Mark Mangino who directed the Jayhawks to a BCS appearance in the 2008 Orange Bowl and finishing 12-1 that season.
