Who’s In and Who’s Out on Texas Tech’s Coaching Staff
There's always turnover when it comes to a head coaching change, but the Matt Wells Era seems like it's going to be a fresh start for Texas Tech football.
Wednesday afternoon, Texas Tech Athletics announced new additions to Matt Wells' Red Raider Football coaching staff.
Luke Wells, Julius Brown, Jovon Bouknight, Steve Farmer, DeAndre Smith and Dave Scholz have followed Wells from Utah State to Texas Tech. They follow offensive coordinator David Yost and defensive coordinator Keith Patterson in coming to Lubbock from Utah.
Of course, every coach that gets hired is also confirmation that the corresponding coach from Kliff Kingsbury's staff will not return. So, here are the staff changes that have taken place so far.
Offensive Coordinator: IN David Yost > OUT Kevin Johns / Kliff Kingsbury
Defensive Coordinator: IN Keith Patterson > OUT David Gibbs
Inside Receivers / Tight Ends: IN Luke Wells > OUT Kevin Johns
Though Kevin Johns was the offensive coordinator, he was actually just the inside receivers coach, with Kingsbury being the actual offensive coordinator. When is the last time that Texas Tech had a dedicated tight ends coach? It's definitely a rare sighting.
Outside Receivers: IN Jovon Bouknight > OUT Emmett Jones
While it's sad to see Emmett Jones go, Jovon Bouknight has to be excited to step into the most talented room on the Texas Tech roster.
Running Backs: IN DeAndre Smith > OUT Clay McGuire
It was thought that McGuire might be kept on the staff with his connections to Coach Yost and Texas Tech, but Matt Wells seems to be going all-in on the staff overhaul.
Offensive Line: IN Steve Farmer > OUT Brandon Jones
Brandon Jones leaves an All-American guard and experienced offensive line behind and in the hands of Steve Farmer.
Defensive Backs: IN Julius Brown > OUT Brett Dewhurst
Juice Brown is not just a coach of corners and safeties. He's a dynamic recruiter and personality. It's no surprise Brown was one of the first new hires announced after four defensive players decommitted following Kingsbury's firing.
Strength and Conditioning Program: IN Dave Scholz > OUT Rusty Whitt
Fan favorite and overall badass Rusty Whitt has also been relieved of his duties, with Wells again dipping into the Utah State bucket to fill the position with Dave Scholz.
With these coaching hires confirmed, Texas Tech now lacks a defensive line coach, a linebackers coach, a special teams coordinator, and another defensive assistant.
