TJ Holyfield Helps Texas Tech Basketball Turn a Corner
The Texas Tech Red Raiders were floating along at 3-3 in conference play and a seemingly endless list of overtime losses outside of conference play. More than that, grad transfer TJ Holyfield was underperforming in big moments.
After a massive Big 12 debut against Oklahoma State, Holyfield had one game with double digits and 7 blocks in the first six conference games.
Since Kentucky, however, Holyfield has been on a tear, scoring double digits in three of the next four games and blocking 16 shots. That includes three Big 12 victories, and a game he played so well against that Jayhawks big man Dok Azubukie was benched the following game.
The most recent win, a comeback victory over the Texas Longhorns, included eight rebounds and five blocks including several down the stretch to clinch the 62-57 Red Raider victory. The win felt even better after the Red Raiders were down 12 at halftime, with fans claiming Chris Beard had lost the team. The Red Raiders went on to outscore the Longhorns 43-26 in the second half.
Jahmi'us Ramsey also continued his hot streak with 18 points on 6-for-7 from the floor.
Texas Tech continues Big 12 play by wrapping up the season series against TCU on Big Monday at the United Supermarkets Arena.
