Texas Tech Legend Shares Why He Became a Red Raider
Eric Ward was a 4-star coveted receiver in the 2009 class and was committed to the University of Oklahoma. He was considered a lock for the Sooners, but then he enrolled at Texas Tech in Spring 2009.
It was a major shock, and no one really knew the real reason for the flip. Decommitments happen all the time, but now we know the real reason behind the Ward flip from OU to TTU.
He was homeless and Texas Tech started a week earlier.
No, seriously -- he relayed the story on Twitter:
Eric Ward isn't the biggest name to come through the program in the last 10 years, but he was a top 5 receiver all-time from a record book perspective. He also led the team through the dark ages, AKA the Tommy Tuberville years.
Ward finished his career top 3 in touchdown receptions and catches. He also finished in the top 5 in receiving yards.
An impressive feat at any school, but to have those accomplishments against the receiving lineage that's come through Texas Tech since 2000 is that much more impressive. It's hard to talk about the history of the Air Raid at Texas Tech without talking about Eric Ward catching back shoulder fades against anybody he wanted to.
Ward graduated Texas Tech with a Master of Education degree in Special Education, and is now the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Burkburnett High School.
