Officials at Smylie Wilson Middle School on Thursday, December 5th, 2019 informed parents that a firearm had been brought to school.

In an email sent at 5:14 p.m., Smylie Wilson Middle School Principal Kelly Brownfield assured parents that no threats were made to school safety and that the firearm was quickly confiscated.

From the email:

Earlier today, a firearm was brought onto our campus, which is a zero-tolerance violation of Lubbock ISD policy. Even though no threats were made, the violator was arrested and faces severe disciplinary action. Please talk to your student about the importance of telling an adult if they see something out of the ordinary, and also the severity of consequences taken against anyone who brings any type of weapon on campus. We are committed to student and staff safety and keeping you informed.

The violator's name was not released.

Smylie Wilson will close after the current school year ends. The school's name will be changed, and it will reopen as a magnet school in fall 2020.
