These Thanksgiving Foods Are Bad For Your Dog

We are just weeks away from Thanksgiving but already people are preparing for the big holiday. With warnings that some Thanksgiving meal staples may be running short, some people are already stocking up. So, while Thanksgiving is on the mind it's worth mentioning one member of the family that really shouldn't be looking forward to the entire Thanksgiving meal, your dog.

If your dog is anything like mine, they will be looking and waiting for you to drop a piece of turkey or ham on the ground this Thanksgiving. And while giving your dog some meat isn't a bad thing to do, there are some foods that dogs should stay away from.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Thanksgiving holiday goes along with an increase to veterinarians around the country. The AKC has also released a list of foods you shouldn't feed your dog.

• Turkey bones, skin, and gravy. While turkey meat is fine, just make sure to remove any bones or skin. The skin can be unsafe if it’s been prepared with butter, spices, and other fatty ingredients.
• Stuffing. Stuffing can contain too many ingredients and spices that are bad for dogs.
• Casseroles, Mashed potatoes, and creamed peas are all bad for dogs.
• Chocolate, cookies, pies, and sweets. These are pretty common things not to feed your dog.
• Raisins and grapes are also bad for dogs
• Onions, scallions, and garlic
• Yeast Dough
• Fatty foods
• Any food containing spices
• Ham
• Alcoholic beverages. We shouldn’t have to say this, but please don’t get your dog drunk.

The good news? There are still plenty of things you can feed your dog. Turkey meat is great, just remember to remove bones. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, apples, green beans, plain peas, and even pumpkin are all okay for dogs.
