Texas Tech Pulls Off Huge Upset Against Texas in Austin
Texas Tech eked out a win in Austin Friday night and will head to a bowl game.
Kliff Kingsbury started backup QB McLane Carter, marking the first time Nic Shimonek wouldn't lead the team onto the field. Shimonek later came in to nail down the win against a UT squad that was a 10-point favorite.
Shimonek finished 4-8 with 96 yards and two touchdowns.
But it was the Red Raiders' defense that was the true MVP of the game, with Dakota Allen a standout player. The Red Raiders held the Longhorns to 388 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers, two of which came on interceptions in the final minute of the game.
The last time Texas Tech beat Texas in the confines of Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium was in 2015. That game was locked down with a trick play called 'Little People Big World.'
According to Texas Tech, this is the first time in the team's history they've won back-to-back games against UT. It also gives Kliff Kingsbury a winning record in Austin, Texas.
Texas Tech has ended its 2017 season with a 6-6 record.
