Texas Tech Unleashing 1970s Throwback Uniforms for TCU Game
The road game featuring Texas Tech in the hostile territory of Fort Worth will be highlighted by Texas Tech wearing the throwback uniforms they first broke out during the Oklahoma State game in 2017.
Texas Tech also wore the same throwbacks alternating home and away in the 2014 and 2015 Arkansas games.
If you want to see the full white jersey, you can see it on the Under Armour Website, but it's the same concept as the ones shown above. The helmets and pants will be identical, down to the wide triple stripe on the pants and the stars on the helmet. The jersey will be white instead of red.
The uniform is a throwback to the early 1970s during the Jim Carlen Era. His 1973 squad is arguably the best Texas Tech team of all time, boasting an 11-1 record and a Gator Bowl victory. The Carlen uniforms might also be the greatest of all-time.
I would venture to say that this throwback, the all-white version, will be the best looking throwback Texas Tech has put out with Under Armour.
These are a close second in the looks category, and carry special sentiment, being dubbed the Zach Thomas throwbacks. But the only use was a bad loss to Arkansas.
The most successful throwback uniform for Texas Tech would be the road alternate Zach Thomas-era throwbacks, which had away victories against Arkansas and Texas, both in 2015. The 2015 iteration did take a hit that it didn't feature the undershirt extension sleeve stripe which I thought put the home version over the edge. Here they are in action against the Longhorns:
Bonus: This game featured an incredible trick play, too.
The throwback jersey is always a special touch in the season, and the road throwback has already performed well. So maybe we can go ahead and lock in the victory over TCU? That's how it works, right? Also, for what it's worth, Texas Tech is 11-5 in games where they wear either the road throwback or all-white. Those two combos join forces on Thursday against TCU.
