As college football seems precariously perched on the edge of happening or not happening preseason accolades continue to be released. Yesterday, Alan Bowman was announced as a Davey O'Brien watchlist member. Today, running back SaRodorick Thompson has been placed on the Doak Walker Award watchlist.

The Doak Walker Award is given to the best running back in college football every season. Thompson will be looking to become the third Red Raider in school history to win the Doak Walker Award, joining the likes of Byron Morris in 1993 and Byron Hanspard in 1996.

In his redshirt freshman campaign, Thompson fought his way into a role as the lead running back for the Red Raiders and ended the season as the leading rusher and was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 for his efforts. Thompson finished 2019 with 756 yards on 120 carries and had 12 touchdowns.

Two games stand out from the 2019 season as times when I though Thompson could be a really good running back. Against Baylor, he had 28 carries and looked better after carry 20 than he did early in the game. Getting better as the game goes on is generally a sign of a great running back, especially if you can do it consistently and after 25 carries. He'd finish with 153 yards and two touchdowns in Waco.

Earlier in the season, I was even more impressed with Thompson against Oklahoma. The Sooners jumped out to a big lead early. The Red Raiders mostly folded early and looked like a team that quit on the field. Then they started feeding Thompson. With everything else burning down around him, he went out and got 96 really tough yards on just 13 carries.

Thompson had at least 80 yards five times last season, and he enters 2020 as the marquee option at running back for the Red Raiders.
