Matt Wells, Texas Tech football's head coach, confirmed Thursday afternoon (December 3rd) that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement put out by the school's athletics department, it was revealed that Wells had tested positive for the novel coronavirus Thursday morning.

Texas Tech football has a plan in place if Wells is unable to coach the team against Kansas on Saturday: Defensive Coordinator Keith Patterson will temporarily fill the head coach role.

From Texas Tech University:

Texas Tech received notification earlier this morning that Coach Wells tested positive for COVID-19. At this time, Coach Wells has returned home to self-isolate and will continue his duties remotely leading into Saturday’s game against Kansas. He will remain in the Big 12’s testing guidelines in order to confirm the positive test. In the case Wells is unable to lead the Red Raiders on Saturday, defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will serve in the head coach capacity.

Texas Tech heads into the Kansas game with a 3-6 record for the 2020 season, with wins against the Houston Baptist Huskies, West Virginia Mountaineers and Baylor.

Matt Wells took over as head coach of the Red Raiders football program in 2019 after the firing of Kliff Kingsbury.

As of December 2nd, 33,271 total cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Lubbock County, with 27,764 recoveries and 371 deaths.
