Ruffin McNeill Has Been Named Interim Defensive Coordinator For Oklahoma
After the near comeback and eventual loss to the Texas Longhorns 48 to 45, the Sooners of Oklahoma were left wondering what the weak link of their team in that game was.
All it took was a day to figure out that the defense was not up to par in that game and Defensive Coordinator, Mike Stoops, took the brunt of it. Stoops has been Oklahoma's defensive coordinator since the 2012 season. He's the brother of former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who retired before the 2017 campaign.
However, being the brother of the former head coach was not enough for Stoops to continue as the defensive coordinator for the Sooners.
There is now a new interim defensive coordinator for Oklahoma and it is someone that Red Raider fans have known and loved for years.
McNeill first coached with Lincoln Riley at Texas Tech under Mike Leach in 2010. McNeill left the Red Raiders to lead the program at East Carolina, taking Riley with him as offensive coordinator. They worked together for five seasons with the Pirates before Bob Stoops hired Riley as offensive coordinator at OU and ECU fired McNeill, who posted a 42-34 record at the school.
Tech fans will have to wait until November 3 to see how McNeill's defense will stack up against Alan Bowman and company but I can guarantee that the Jones will be rocking for that match up. The time for that game however, has still yet to be determined.
On Thursday, October 11th, Texas Tech takes on TCU in Big 12 play. 1340 The Fan's Countdown to Kickoff pregame show can be heard 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. that day. You can listen on the air (1340 AM), online via our website or with the free 1340 The Fan app.
