The 6th annual Willie McCool Memorial Half Marathon is set to be held on May 4, 2019. West Texas Endurance, an event production company, is hosting the race next month.

KAMC News reports that it'll feature a 5K and a 10K race that both begin at the Silent Wings Museum. To honor the event, West Texas Endurance will be donating to the Commander Willie McCool Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is named after Willie McCool who graduated Coronado High School in 1979 and would go on to pilot the Space Shuttle Columbia. McCool and six other astronauts died in 2003 when Columbia was destroyed upon re-entry into earth’s atmosphere.

The Willie McCool scholarship is given each year to a promising graduate of Coronado High School. Registration costs for the Willie McCool Memorial Half Marathon begin at $30 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and under. The marathon begins at 8 a.m. Saturday May 4th.
