The statistics-based website fivethirtyeight.com has announced their player of the year award for 2018, and Patrick Mahomes was a very close second to MLB MVP and World Series Champion Mookie Betts.

From the site: "NFL MVP favorite Patrick Mahomes was a very close second behind Betts, having produced one of the top individual skill-position seasons of the millennium while leading the Kansas City Chiefs’ explosive offense. (And he’s still going, of course.)"

Not only did Mahomes earn the second place spot this season. He also statistically had the fifth-best season of any athlete since 2000, according to fivethirtyeight.com and their statistical metrics.

On his way to being named the second best player in any sport of 2018, Mahomes broke a lot of records. He topped Len Dawson's passing records for the Chiefs. He broke assorted fastest-to-you-name-it records for the NFL. He was just the third person to ever throw 50 touchdowns in the NFL, and just the second to do it while also throwing for 5,000 yards. He's the only man in history to throw for 5,000 yards in the NFL and NCAA.

Mahomes even set negative records, like leading the first NFL team to ever lose while scoring at least 50 points...in the same game where Mahomes was the first player since the 1930s to score six touchdowns and commit five turnovers.

Even in the Chiefs' four losses this season to date, Mahomes was great.

Throughout the good and the bad, he was a large reason why the Chiefs are the number one seed in the AFC playoffs and the number one scoring offense.

Hopefully, Patrick Mahomes can add a championship to his phenomenal season as Mookie Betts did.
