Lubbock ISD Opts-in to be First to try new Drug Disposal Program
Lubbock ISD will be the first district in the state of Texas to try the new Friday Night Lights Against Opioids program. The program was launched by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on October 12 and LISD is quickly putting it into action. This program is looking to put an end to opioid abuse around schools in Texas since the state of Texas is ranked in the top-5 for opioid deaths.
The coaltion is made up of Texas football legends, NFL Hall of Famers, and community leaders across the state of Texas. There will be public service announcements made during area football games in regards to the new program along with educational materials to be sent to over 1 millions parents, students, and educators.
KAMC news reported that the launch of the program will be a two day event involving several area football games. The coalition will be passing out 3000 at-home drug disposal kits at the Lubbock area high school football games on Fridays. The kits will be distributed to help promote the proper disposal of medications. The kits, known as DisposeRx, come with DisposeRx powder that is mixed with water and the desired medications that are needing to be disposed of and just given a shake.
The packets were distributed for the first time at the Estacado High School versus Big Spring High School game on October 27. The next distribution of the DisposeRx packets will be passed out Friday, October 28, at the Monterey High School versus Coronado High School. Those packets will be on a first come basis at the Coronado Football Field, kickoff for that game will be at 7 p.m..
