When I was in Houston for the Texas Bowl, I had the pleasure of getting an incredible sandwich and tater tots at the State's oldest Irish Sports Pub Griff's. I had the Chicken Philly and it was legitimately one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

Just a few weeks later, Griff's was involved in a massive fire that started around 4 am. Houston fire officials said the bar was engulfed in flames when they got there and it looks to be a total loss. The fire is still under investigation, but the age of the building that was built in the 60s makes it seem like an accidental fire. That age also made it more difficult to fight the fire. The wind was also an issue.

Arson investigators were on hand as they are with any major fire.

I hope the fire has at least been contained to the front half of the bar, as there was a ton of Texas Tech memorabilia toward the back and on the back patio. Including a pirate flag signed by the late Mike Leach. The Bar was purchased by a pair of Red Raider twins about twenty years ago from the original owner, who is still a regular at the bar.

The owners have already said that they plan to rebuild in the same location. With Texas Tech playing more often in Houston in the next several years with the addition of the Houston Cougars to the Big 12, I can't wait to get back to the city to take in the new Griff's as soon as they rebuild.
