The Kansas City Chiefs made the obvious move and exercised the fifth-year option on the contract of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The move extends his rookie contract through the 2021 season.

The move itself though is just a formality. The Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes' representatives don't even want to get to the 2021 season on the current contract. Once the new deal is signed, this option will be replaced with much more significant money.

During the 2020 NFL Draft, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt referred to a contract extension for Mahomes by saying, "I really can't say it's something that's going to happen in the next three months, the next six months.'' Hunt said after the draft, he'd have the time to work out deals for both Chris Jones and Mahomes.

Regardless of if the deal even makes it to 2021 before an extension, it's always smart to have Patrick Mahomes know you want him to be happy. He's done a lot already for the Kansas City Chiefs for a relatively small amount of money.
