Boren lost to current Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish in the 2018 runoff election. Boren came close to winning the seat when three candidates were on the ballot in the March 2018 primary. Boren received 48% of the vote, but Parrish was able to win the May runoff with 54% of the vote.

Now Boren is back and is pushing the issue of crime in Lubbock and that officials on both the Lubbock County level and City of Lubbock level haven't done enough to cut down on crime.

During the interview, Boren spoke about crime within the City of Lubbock and Lubbock County and criticized elected officials for not being more vocal in standing up for police. Without saying his name, Boren went after Parrish for "hiding in his office".

When asked how much more money the Lubbock County Sheriff's office needs. Boren said, "however much it takes to win the war". Boren was then asked if Lubbock County voters should vote for more money to go to the Sheriff's Department or if it should should just be approved by the Lubbock County Commissioners. Boren said, "both".

There might be cases where we do put it to the voters. But when it comes time to taking care of our people, that's what you elect me to do. Do you want me to come to you with every decision. Are you going to pay more money for a Medical Examiner? My view is, you hire me, let me do my job and if you don't like me in four years, no problem, but you won't find me hiding so I can keep a job that pays over $100,000 a year.

During the interview Boren also discussed his background with the Lubbock County Expo Center board.
