Friday Is The Last Day To File For Lubbock City Council Election

Citizens around Lubbock are stepping up and deciding they want to lead the Lubbock City Council in a new direction. Even more are at least thinking about running for office in Lubbock.

As citizens head to the polls for early voting in the Republican and Democrat primaries, local elections are just starting up in Lubbock. The May 7, 2022 General Election will feature a number of Lubbock City Council seats on the ballot. District 1, District 3, and District 5 will all be on the ballot and of course voters will also get to choose the next Mayor.

According to reports, at least five people are running for Mayor including Tray Payne, Gulrez "Gus" Khan, and Adam Hernandez. Epifanio Garza and Stephen Sanders have filed to run, but haven't officially announced.

So far, two candidates have filed to run in District 1. Those would be Christy Martinez and Pat Kelly. District 3 has one official candidate. Mark McBrayer is running for Lubbock City Council to replace Jeff Griffith. District three also has other candidates who have picked up candidate packets but have not officially filed to run yet. And District 5 may prove to be the toughest race as Chase Head, Bill Felton, Keri Thomas, and Randy Christian have all filed to run. There are other potential candidates that have picked up packets but have not filed. Randy Christian is seeking re-election in District 5.

Potential candidates have until February 18 to file for local office. Those who have picked up packets are not candidates until they actually file paperwork to run.

No matter what, it looks as though more citizens are getting involved and that is good for the entire city.
