5 Red Raiders Sign Undrafted Free Agency Deals
Saturday marked the end of the 2018 NFL Draft, and while a couple of Red Raiders were drafted during day three, most of the former Texas Tech players who declared did not hear their name called.
Every year after the draft, teams that need to fill some remaining spots in their 90-man roster look to the players who did not get drafted and sign them as an undrafted free agents. For five Red Raiders, they are getting a chance to continue their dreams of playing in the NFL.
The five players are: Nic Shimonek, Cam Batson, Mychealon Thomas, Justin Stockton and Derrick Willies.
Arguably, the most notable name from this group is former Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek, who's going to the Los Angeles Chargers to be reunited with Dylan Cantrell, as well as learning from head coach and former Red Raider Anthony Lynn.
A surprise from this group was that Derrick Willies was signed by the Cleveland Browns, who also drafted former Texas Tech QB Baker Mayfield.
While Willies missed some games for the Red Raiders and struggled with drops in 2017, he has the athleticism and the size to turn some heads at the Browns camp. It's an uphill battle for sure, but Willies just might be able to make some noise.
With the announcement of those five players signing, that brings Tech's total to seven players heading to an NFL team out of this year's draft.
Hopefully, we will see some of these former Red Raiders get their chance to shine in the NFL.
