KeSean Carter was criminally underused in his past three seasons at Texas Tech. Now, he's heading to the transfer portal after his best season as a Red Raider.

Carter confirmed the news on his own Twitter account Monday afternoon:

Here's Carter's full statement:

I want to thank Texas Tech for giving me the opportunity to be a dual-sport athlete. There are not many athletes that can say that they were given this opportunity and I was blessed to learn so much from both programs. I want to personally thank the Track coaches, Coach Kittley and Rob for always believing in me even though I didn't get to run a full season for them. They showed me the true meaning of believing in and supporting their athletes no matter what. TTU has taught me so much and help mold me into the man I am today but after talking with my family, we believe it's best to put my name in the transfer portal. I would like to thank all the fans. It's been real TECH! 82 out...

The talented receiver never really reached his full potential at Texas Tech through no fault of his own. He moved positions between staff changes and split time with the track team before finally breaking out this season. Through the first three games, Carter had already doubled his season mark for touchdowns in a season and passed his career mark.

He'd finish the season appearing in just six games and was only 13 yards shy of his best season prior to 2020. So why is the breakout receiver of 2020 leaving Texas Tech? I don't know the answer to that.

Maybe it's the uncertainty that now surrounds the program with David Yost being fired and Matt Wells retained. Maybe it goes back to Carter's entire tenure in Lubbock and ultimately feeling that he'd reached his ceiling here and needs to stretch his legs elsewhere.

Whatever the case, I firmly believe that Carter was one of the top two receivers at Texas Tech this season, along with Erik Ezukanma. Both were obviously frustrated with the program. Carter shows that with his transfer, Ezukanma showed it with his comments after the Kansas game.

Of course, just because Carter has entered the portal doesn't guarantee that he'll transfer. It just starts the process. I hope that he returns and this nightmare is behind us soon enough.
