Texas Tech basketball head coach Chris Beard reached out to Lubbock teen Brooklyn Boyer to encourage her after a week of intense recovery from a scary swimming accident and subsequent surgery.

Boyer's brother has been updating people about her status via his Facebook page.

Wednesday was a special update where the self-described Kansas fan got a special message from a rival head coach named Chris Beard.

Beard tells Brooklyn to keep persevering through the adversity, and says she is in his and the Texas Tech basketball team's prayers.

In the past week, a GoFundMe fundraiser was set up and has raised over $17,000 of the requested $20,000 to help with expenses resulting from the accident.

The GoFundMe reads:

On June 10, Brooklyn was in a swimming accident that resulted in a spine injury. She has had surgery and according to the neurosurgeon, it "couldn't have been any better." The vertebrae fusion is stabilized and all pressure is off of the spinal cord. There are still a lot of questions to be answered and a long journey to go, but what we do know is that Brooklyn will be in ICU for about a week and will need therapy to help regain control of her body. Help us raise some money to cover as much medical expense as we can for the Boyers so that they can focus not on finances, but on making sure Brooklyn has everything that she needs!
