Brett Cecil Throws Complete Game Shutout to Lead Toronto Blue Jays Pass the Texas Rangers

Toronto’s pitcher Brett Cecil pitched his second complete game in the last 4 starts as he threw a 4 hit shut out to lead the Blue Jays to a 3-0 win over the Rangers.

Cecil had previously been in Triple-A after he had a terrible April where his ERA jumped up to 6.68. Since then, he has started 5 games. This was Cecil’s first career shutout in 55 career game.

Cecil had this to say about his performance:

“It’s a great accomplishment, to come back from where I was at the start of the season and floating around the whole season, it’s a huge thing for me to get back on the right path. I just hope it continues.” -AP

Alexi Ogando was pitching for the Rangers. Ogando had won his previous 3 starts after losing 3 straight before the all-star break. Ogando went 6 2/3rd innings while giving up 3 runs on 7 hits.

Despite scoring17 combined runs in the first 2 games of the series, the Ranger bats went quiet last night. The Rangers managed 4 singles and only had 1 runner reach second base all night.

Michael Young and Nelson Cruz each recorded a single and Triple-A recall Craig Gentry record 2 other singles for the Rangers. All Ranger hits came early in the inning and led to 6 hitters being left on base. Cruz was the only batter to record a hit that was not a lead-off. Cruz’s came with 2 outs in the 9th.

This is the Rangers 3rd loss in 17 games. They also had a 9 game home win streak snapped with the loss.

The temperature last night in the Ballpark in Arlington was 105 degrees, matching the record high set earlier this month. The only odd part about this was this was a night game.
