Are The Yankees Interested in Another Former Houston Astro?
According to MLB's Mark Feinsand, the New York Yankees are reportedly showing interest in free agent catcher Martin Maldonado.
The Yankees will now be looking for a backup catcher thanks to the Tigers signing Austin Romine to a 1-year contract.
Maldonado joined the Astros late last season, playing in 27 games during the regular season, and 5 games during the postseason. During 10 of those games, Gerrit Cole was on the bump and was fantastic throwing to Maldonado.
Cole held a 1.57 ERA when Maldonado was his catcher and held opponents to a .471 OPS, which were the lowest numbers among any catcher he threw to in 2019.
If the Yankees aren't comfortable with Kyle Higashioka being their primary backup to Gary Sanchez, Maldonado might be a great option to pair with their brand new ace.
