American Judo fighter Nick Delpopolo has been expelled from the London Olympics after testing positive for marijuana. Delpopolo claims that he did not intentionally consume the marijuana, but rather unknowingly ate some, causing his positive test.

Delpopolo is the first of nearly 11,000 athletes that have failed the in competition drug testing. Oddly enough, testing positive for Mary Jane is considered by doping by the International Olympic Committee.

When he discovered he had tested positive and was being expelled, Delpopolo issued a statement, ‘‘I apologize to US Olympic Committee, to my teammates, and to my fans, and I am embarrassed by this mistake. I look forward to representing my country in the future, and will rededicate myself to being the best judo athlete that I can be.’’

The IOC have discussed changing their drug policy to allow the use of marijuana, but as it currently stands, it is considered doping, and will have you barred from competition.

I may be being difficult, but what if an athlete is from a country that condones marijuana use, can the IOC still punish the athletes for partaking?
