A Lubbock County couple was arrested on Thursday, January 27th for manslaughter after their 2-month-old child was found dead almost half a year prior.
KAMC News reports that Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the couple's home in the 1200 block of Walnut Street in Idalou on July 11th, 2021 after an ambulance had been called. There, the officers found the dead 2-month-old.
The father, 31-year-old Adam Canales, Jr., said that the baby had been crying and he put her to bed. At first, he denied giving her any sort of medication other than "gas drops."
However, Adam admitted later that he had given the baby Benadryl. This was after the cause of death was determined to be "mixed drug toxicity." He said that even though he knew he wasn't supposed to give Benadryl to infants, he had done it before to make her drowsy.
The mother, 21-year-old Sarah Canales, sad that she had seen Adam on multiple occasions give their children medicine to get them to go to sleep. She also told investigators that she knew Benadryl wasn't supposed to be given to infants.
A GoFundMe account was opened by family members after the death. Once donations reached $1,275, the page was closed.
A $100,000 bond has been set for both Adam and Sarah.
