The 2016 Texas Tech Arizona State matchup was an eye opening experience for the Red Raiders and their fans. The Texas Tech defense gave up 651 yards to the Sun Devils including 300 yards on the ground in a 68-55 loss.

The absolute star of the game only had 13 carries but he made them count. Kalen Ballage had 137 yards and SEVEN touchdowns including a 75 yard romp and a few out of a wildcat formation Texas Tech had zero answer for. Ballage also added a recieving touchdown to tie a NCAA record for most touchdowns in a single game.

Patrick Mahomes had a solid game leading the potent Red Raider offense to 600 plus yards. Mahomes threw for 540 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was also the leading rusher with 44 yards and a touchdown. Mahomes also threw two interceptions proving he couldn't do it alone and set the course for many similar results to finish 2016 5-7.

The defensive high spot for Texas Tech was true freshman Jordyn Brooks who racked up double digit tackles including 2 TFL.

The game opened up with punts from each team before Arizona State struck first with a touchdown pass from Manny Wilkins, before giving the ball back to the Red Raiders at mid-field after an onside kick attempt. Mahomes would take advantage putting it in with his legs.

The Texas Tech defense would stand strong forcing a punt on a four play drive but the Texas Tech offense wouldn't take advantage of the rare stop with a bad snap on the first play resulting in a Red Raider safety.

9-7 Arizona State.

The Sun Devils would punt again after the safety before an offensive explosion from both teams with the Red Raiders with the only punt for the rest of the half resulting in a 37-34 halftime score.

By the end of the 3rd quarter the Sun Devils had a 10 point lead at 51-41.

With 12 minutes left in the game the Red Raiders were backed deep into their own territory with Patrick Mahomes throwing an INT that was returned to the Red Raider one yard line. Kalen Ballage would only need one carry on the next two Sun Devil possessions one from the one and the other from their own 25 for a 75 yard romp.

Texas Tech would strike in between but it was all academic at this point with the final score 68-55.

Texas Tech would go 4-6 in their remaining games beating Baylor in the final game of the year to notch their 5th win.

Texas Tech and Arizona State will have a rematch on September 16th at 7:00 pm.
