You didn't make the mistake of thinking winter was over did you? Don't be confused by the relatively warm days we've had lately or the dust blowing in the wind. Winter is not over, and over the next several days, much of our area will be reminded just how cold it can get.
The polar vortex has already brought arctic cold temperatures across north-central states. According to USA Today, some areas of the nation saw wind chills as low as 40 to 50 below zero. That's cold. Very cold.
Thankfully, we aren't going to get that cold in Lubbock, but it could still get uncomfortable. High's in Lubbock are forecasted to be in the low 40's on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with low temperatures in the teens on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, the polar vortex will show what it can really bring. As of this writing, the high on Saturday will be in the 20's with lows in the single digits. On Sunday, Lubbock's high is forecasted as of today to be around 17 degrees with lows in the single digits to negative degrees. Monday won't be much better with highs in the low 20's.
So yes, it's going to be cold and could be colder than what is forecasted on this Tuesday afternoon.
It will be so cold that the City of Lubbock has asked citizens to winterize their indoor and outdoor plumbing.
Winterizing Outdoor Plumbing & Irrigation
- Manually turn off irrigation systems during freezing events;
- Check aboveground backflow assemblies, insulate, cover with insulation box and check heating element if applicable;
- Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets;
- Cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers;
- Drain and winterize pools according to your pool maintenance provider or manual;
- Wrap pipes and plumbing under pier and beam homes;
Winterizing Indoor Plumbing
- Use heat tape or pipe wraps to protect vulnerable pipes in attics, garages, crawl spaces, basements or outdoors;
- Seal cracks and holes passing through exterior walls, doors, and around pipes, with insulation material;
- Open cabinets under sinks to circulate warm air;
- If you are leaving town, turn the water off at the meter;
One last thing. Don't forget about your pets. Make sure they have a warm protected are or are brought inside the house.
