The Blue Sand Project Aims To Raise Awareness Of Human Trafficking

The month of January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human trafficking on the South Plains may not be something you think about everyday or even think happens in our part of the state, but sadly it does. Human trafficking happens across the state of Texas and across the United States.

In order to bring more awareness of the issue, The United Family has partnered with several local organizations to kick off the Texas Blue Sand Project. One Voice Home, Voice of Hope, and Open Door are partnering with The United Family for the second year to promote the project that was developed by the Texas Attorney General's Office. The Attorney General's wanted to bring awareness of human trafficking by spreading blue sand in the cracks of sidewalks. The hope is that communities can prevent victims from falling through the cracks by raising awareness.

According to a press release from the United Family, while supplies last, you can pick up blue sand packets at all United Express locations for free.

“Human trafficking is a horrible reality that happens every day around the world as well as right here in our backyard,” said Angelos Lambis, director of fuel & convenience for The United Family. “Participating in the Texas Blue Sand Project and putting up these stickers are an example of something we can do to help. We are proud to join with these organizations to do our part in raising awareness.”

 

While supplies last, guests will find free packets of blue sand at all United Express locations across Lubbock. On January 26, community members are asked to join in and spread the blue sand in the cracks of sidewalks across their communities. Community members can share a picture on social media with the #TXBlueSandProject.

Don't forget to spread the blue sand on January 26th. In addition to the blue sand, United Supermarkets will be placing stickers in bathrooms inside stores and fuel stations that will include a number to call for help and a number to text.
