Oklahoma was able to hold onto the top spot in the first regular-season rankings, while the LSU Tigers used their 40-27 victory against Oregon to jump into the second spot ahead of rival Alabama, which slipped to 3rd. Boise State moved into the 4th slot after an impressive 35-21 win against Georgia, while Florida State rounded out the top 5.

The Sooners received 32 of 60 first-place votes and 1,448 points. LSU received 17 first-place votes and 1,415 points.
