Texas Tech’s Season Comes to an End at the Hands of Ole Miss
The Texas Tech Red Raider baseball team had their season come to an end yesterday as they fell to the Rebels of Ole Miss by a score of 2-1. Tech freshman starting right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley pitched a season-high 7.1 innings allowing just one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks while the Rebel's starter Christian Trent pitched eight shutout innings with six strikeouts and a walk allowing six base hits.
Tim Tadlock and company had struggled offensively all game but finally broke out of it to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the ninth. Senior designated hitter Adam Kirsch singled to center field giving the Red Raiders a base runner to start a late rally. Sophomore pinch runner Zach Davis proceeded to steal second and third base and then scored on pinch hitter Anthony Lyons' sacrifice fly to right field.
Ole Miss would respond immediately though in their half of the ninth as Ole Miss pinch hitter John Gatlin slapped a 1-2 pitch from Tech reliever Dominic Moreno into right field for the game-winning RBI single to eliminate the Red Raiders from the College World Series. Ole Miss started its ninth-inning rally with a one-out walk and then put runners at the corners following a throwing error by Tech reliever Cameron Smith to Tim Proudfoot who was covering second base for an attempted double-play on a grounder up the middle. Smith would be awarded the loss.
Texas Tech finishes the year with a 45-21 record which is the fourth most in school history while also playing a school record 66 games overall this season. The Red Raiders completed its first-ever appearance at the College World Series with an 0-2 record with a pair of one-run losses against two top-five nationally ranked opponents.
