When a terrible crime happens, it's easy to get focused on the person who committed the crime. We want to know how such a thing could happen. Why would a person do such a thing? It's human nature, and it does help us to learn and grow.

However, it can also cause us extreme anxiety. It's upsetting to dwell on the evil people inflict on each other. I am exhausted. I'm sure you are, too.

That's why I was delighted to see the beautiful, simple, but amazing thing Texas Tech student Garrett Looka set up for everyone to participate in.

Garrett left a bag full of cards for the community, and especially fellow Texas Tech students, to sign. Fittingly, he left them in front of Memorial Circle and he will pick them up tonight (Oct. 10, 2017) around 8:30 p.m. The cards will be given to the family of slain Texas Tech police officer Floyd East Jr., who was murdered Monday evening.

The story has already made many major national and international outlets, including NPR, Newsweek, Metro UK and the New York Times.

Let's show the world that we are not the person who murdered this police officer, but that we are Garrett Looka. Show compassion, empathy, support and love for each other today. We need each other. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Garrett.
