According to, Texas Tech baseball senior and freshman infielders Hunter Hargrove and Josh Jung were named Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week, respectively.

This is the first set of honors given by the Big 12 with play starting last weekend. This is the second time in as many years that Texas Tech has received player of the week and newcomer of the week in the same week. Tanner Gardner and Davis Martin picked up the awards on March 21, 2016.

Hunter Hargrove went 4-5 on opening day. He was a triple shy of the cycle. He had four more hits on the weekend. Among his eight hits were three doubles and two home runs, along with seven RBI and five runs scored.

After five games, Hargroveis second in the Big 12 in hits with nine and home runs with two. He leads the league in doubles with four and total bases with 19.

Freshman Josh Jung has also had a great start to the 2017 season. In his collegiate debut Jung went 2-for-5 with a walk, a run scored and a RBI. Over his first weekend of play, Jung tallied seven hits, including two doubles, three RBI, four runs, nine total bases and three walks and he only continued against New Mexico State.

Jung is 3rd in the conference in batting avg hitting .500 over his first five games. He's gotten a hit in all 5 of those games and with five walks he's leading the conference in on base percentage at .609.

The No. 11 Red Raiders return to action on Friday against the Cal Bears for a 4 game series at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
