Texas Tech's defense looked like it would have to carry the day against Florida International. Though the first quarter it was 7-7, and the only points from Texas Tech came on a pick-six by safety Muddy Waters. Then, the Red Raiders reeled off 28 points in the third quarter and got to 47 before Tyler Shough was pulled with a 47-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Shough set or tied career highs for completions, attempts, passing yards, completion percentage with at least 10 attempts in a game, and touchdowns. It wasn't a perfect night from Shough, but the protection was worlds better in Week 3, and the production reflected that. There were also 11 Red Raiders who caught passes from Shough after a knock early in the season being that there was too much reliance on Erik Ezukanma.

It wasn't just that Texas Tech scored four times in the 2nd quarter; it's how they did it. The Red Raiders had drives of 7 plays for 80 yards, 3 plays for 75 yards, 6 plays for 68 yards, and 12 plays for 61 yards. It was a brilliant mix of sustained drives combined with the big plays that Texas Tech has been too reliant on thus far this season.

Texas Tech also had the realization that they had tight ends on the roster against the Panthers. Travis Koontz had a career night with six catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman tight end Mason Tharp also had a big night, recording his first collegiate catch and touchdown, finishing with three catches for 61 yards and the one score.

Texas Tech finished non-conference play 3-0 and is in a great position to get bowl eligible in 2021. They'll open conference play next weekend against Texas in Austin at 11 a.m.
