Texas Tech Baseball’s Jamodrick McGruder, Shane Broyles Drafted

Texas Tech baseball’s Jamodrick McGruder and Shane Broyles heard their named called Tuesday on the second day of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft, joining centerfielder Barrett Barnes who went 45^th overall Monday to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

McGruder, a junior second baseman, was selected in the 9^th round (281 overall) by the Seattle Mariners.

Broyles, a junior right-handed pitcher, was drafted in the 14^th round (438 overall) by the Colorado Rockies.

With his selection McGruder became the second highest drafted middle infielder in Red Raider history and the fifth highest drafted infielder in school history.

McGruder was an All-Big 12 first team selection and became the first Red Raider since 2004 to be named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy – an award given out annually to the top collegiate baseball player.

He batted .325 (69-for-193) for the year with 54 runs, six doubles, eight triples and 27 RBI while leading the Big 12 and ranking fourth nationally with 39-of-44 stolen bases.

McGruder ranks second all-time in both Texas Tech and Big 12 history with 90 career stolen bases.

Broyels was the 13^th Texas Tech pitcher to be drafted/signed in the MLB draft since 2008 and the sixth Tech pitcher to selected in the top 12 rounds of the draft since that same year.

In his first season with the Red Raiders after transferring in, Broyles went 2-2 with a 4.42 ERA in a team-leading 23 appearances with 57 innings pitched and 46 strikeouts with 20 walks allowed.

He was the only pitcher on the team to make at least five starts and collect at least 20 appearances on the season, after beginning the year in Texas Tech’s starting rotation and making five straight starts, and then finishing the year making 17 consecutive relief outings.
