Texas Tech Baseball Loses First Two Games in Series at Baylor

Texas Tech Baseball has had a tough weekend, losing their first two Big 12 Conference games of the 2014 season.

Baylor beat Texas Tech 1-0 on Friday and 2-1 Saturday afternoon in a nationally televised game on FOX Sports 1.

Friday night, the Bears scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning.  Darryn Sheppard hit a double to the right-center field gap with one out. Then the next batter up, Adam Toth, drove Sheppard in with a triple down the right field line.

The Red Raiders had two missed opportunities to score in Friday's game.  In the sixth inning, the Red Raiders mustered two base runners with one out. But the momentum was short-lived as Eric Gutierrez struck out swinging and Adam Kirsch flied out to right field to end the inning.

Then in the eighth Stephen Smith led off the inning with a single for Tech. Alec Humphreys beat out an infield hit to third base and Smith was able to advance safely all the way to third base as Baylor third baseman Ben Carl threw the ball wildly to first on the play.

Jake Barrios was then up for the Red Raiders, facing Josh Michalec who came in to relieve starting pitcher Dillon Newman. Barrios was up first pitch swinging and he grounded into a 1-6-3 double play. Smith was held a third base. Gutierrez then came up with two outs and the tying run on third base. He lined out to third to end the inning.

In Saturday's game, Baylor scored single runs in both the first and second innings off of starter Chris Sadberry.

The Red Raiders lone run on Saturday came in the fifth inning with a Jake Barrios RBI single to center.

The sixth and ninth innings were missed opportunities again for the Red Raiders on Saturday. In both innings, the Red Raiders failed to score leaving two men on base in both frames.

Texas Tech's record is now (15-5, 0-2) and Baylor's is (10-8, 2-0). The Bears will have the opportunity to sweep the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is at 1:05p.
