Texas Tech Baseball Hits Home Run for Star Wars Day
May the 4th is Star Wars day. It hasn't always been that way. Actually, it's a fairly recent development and wasn't officially observed by Star Wars until 2013. The first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 when A New Hope was released. That movie spawned an entire universe that's been celebrated in many different ways and venues in the last 40 years.
Something that's been more and more popular in the last decade has been baseball parks at all levels having Star Wars Day at the Ballpark. The promotion generally involves a bobblehead with one of the players or manager dressed as a Jedi or Storm Trooper.
This year with Texas Tech and Oklahoma in Amarillo on a rescheduled game day the Texas Tech Baseball team had settle for a Star Wars-themed video to celebrate and they absolutely crushed a ball over the monster in centerfield.
Bats as lightsabers, highlights, AT-ATs, and more create the illusion that the baseball team is immersed into the Star Wars landscape.
Texas Tech has played annually at the home of the Midland Rockhounds AA team since 2014, but will make their first trip to HODGETOWN tonight, a ballpark that hosts the AA Sod Poodles, who are affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
According to Texas Tech, The Red Raiders are making their first appearance in Amarillo since 1979. This is also Texas Tech's first non-conference regular-season matchup against a conference opponent since 2014. They'll be taking on Oklahoma tonight.
The Sooners had a successful weekend taking the Bedlam Series 2-1 against Oklahoma State. Oklahoma features one of the nation's top hitters in Tyler Hardman, who leads the nation in hits and ranks among the best in batting average and total bases.
