Texas Tech Athletics Announces Positive COVID-19 Cases in Football Program
The Red Raiders have been testing student-athletes weekly for COVID-19 since late July when the majority of the Texas Tech roster joined the coaching staff on campus.
The Texas Tech Athletics Department has completed 1,382 tests for coronavirus and saw 64 positive cases. Twenty-four of those cases remain active as of today, Tuesday, August 25th, with 21 of those in the football program.
The school's press release did not specify if those active cases were players, coaches, or staff.
Texas Tech athletics is reporting a 4.6 positivity rate as part of its testing procedures since the middle of June when they started transitioning athletes back to campus.
According to the Texas Tech Athletics' press release: "Any student-athlete that has tested positive for COVID-19 has been immediately placed in self-isolation to prevent the further spread of the virus. Affected student-athletes receive daily monitoring and care from Texas Tech’s sports medicine staff with additional oversight by the City of Lubbock Health Department."
The Red Raiders have not had a practice media availability since last Thursday, but will have Matt Wells, Xavier White and Josh Burger available for comments after practice today. Wells will be able to provide more clarity on the current landscape of COVID-19 and Texas Tech football.
