The Texas Rangers finalized a minor league deal with former New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird Tuesday afternoon. The contract also includes an invitation to spring training.
Bird has a ton of potential and shown flashes of it during his time with the Yankees. However, he is prone to injury.
In 2016, Bird missed the entire season due to right shoulder surgery. Right ankle surgeries limited him to 48 games in 2017 and 82 games in 2018. Bird was the Yankees’ Opening Day first baseman last season and homered. However, he went on the injured list in the middle of April after 10 games and didn't play again.
If Bird can stay healthy, it wouldn't surprise me to see him playing at first base for the Texas Rangers in 2020.
