One of Texas Tech’s Greatest Ambassadors Gets Incredible Honor
On Saturday, August 20th, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Washington Commanders 24-14 in Week 2 of the NFL Preseason. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was 12-19 for 162 yards and threw two touchdown passes, including this one to Jody Fortson.
After the game, Mahomes returned to the field to meet with his wife and daughter and was met on the field by Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt, Texas Tech President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec, and Texas Tech Regent Dustin Womble.
The trio informed Mahomes that he had been approved to be inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor. They also played a video package for Mahomes on the video board that featured his family, his former head coach Kliff Kingsbury and others.
Here's the moment:
Mahomes responded to the honor on Twitter, saying, "Can’t even explain how appreciative I am. Texas Tech has done so much to make me who I am today. I’m honored to be apart of this great University for life!"
Patrick Mahomes' time at Texas Tech is such a strange moment in time. In some ways, if you just look at the big picture of the program, his losing record and 0 bowl game wins across two full seasons of starting don't really paint the picture of a Ring of Honor member. However, leading one of the greatest offenses in Texas Tech history in 2015 and dragging his team through 2016 with myriad injuries made Mahomes the legend he is today.
Some of the biggest what-ifs in Texas Tech history involve Mahomes' two seasons as a Red Raider, but what can't be questioned is his unparalleled success during his short time in the NFL. Despite that losing record at Texas Tech, NFL scouts saw greatness. The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to get him and the pair never looked back.
The only thing Mahomes does better than playing quarterback in the NFL is being an ambassador for Texas Tech. He never misses a chance to root on his Red Raiders. The Kansas City Chiefs and Texas Tech University of partnership agreements based on the fact that Mahomes and the Red Raiders are synonymous. Even only a short time into his career he's an NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Super Bowl MVP, with his name etched in the record books.
There's not a more visible face that promotes greatness.
Mahomes will be inducted into the Ring of Honor during the Kansas City Chiefs bye week, which aligns with the Baylor Bears coming to Lubbock on October 29th. That should be an incredible atmosphere.
