The Big 12 Conference Championship tournament has been taking place this week. Texas Tech was scheduled to play their second game of the tourney this afternoon but the game was canceled according to the Conference website, "Due to inclement weather expected in the Oklahoma City area Thursday evening, games in session 5 of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship were postponed to Friday, May 28."

That makes the bracket look like this:

Since that bracket is hard to understand and read, I'll break it down for you here.

  • Rescheduled Game 8: No. 3 Texas Tech vs. No. 2 TCU [Big 12 Now on ESPN+], 9:00 a.m.
  • Game 10: Game 8 Loser vs. No. 7 K-State [Big 12 Now on ESPN+], 12:30 p.m.
  • Rescheduled Game 9: No. 8 West Virginia vs. No. 4 Oklahoma State [Big 12 Now on ESPN+], 4:00 p.m.
  • Game 11: Game 9 Loser vs. No. 1 Texas [Big 12 Now on ESPN+], 7:30 p.m.

The rescheduling now means that both pods will play consecutive games. Since the tournament is double-elimination, the loser of the winner's bracket will stay on the field to play the winner of the loser's bracket in an elimination game to see who gets to play the winner of Friday's first game on Saturday. Does that make sense? The Big 12 loves to make things complicated.

Obviously, you can't control the weather, however, this convoluted tournament-style being played in a place with automatic bad weather at this time of year is just asking for trouble. Nobody wants to play a doubleheader and stress their bullpen heading into the NCAA Tournament, but with TCU and Texas Tech both on the bubble of being a national seed, they will have to buck up and play along.

If Texas Tech wins on Friday against TCU, they'd play the winner between TCU and Kansas State on Saturday. That team would have to beat Texas Tech twice to advance, while Texas Tech would only need to win one to get to the Championship round on Sunday.

If Texas Tech loses on Friday, they'd have to beat Kansas State. Then beat TCU twice on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship game. Five games in two days is not what the doctor ordered for this Texas Tech baseball team who will be able to play plenty of baseball next weekend.
