The Lubbock Police Officer who let a driver with a stuck accelerator crash into his vehicle says he did so because other vehicles didn't yield the right of way.

On Friday, February 18th, Lubbock Police received a 911 call from 18-year-old Nikolas Merritt-Voels, who said that his brakes weren't working and he couldn't stop. This was at around 2:40 p.m. in the afternoon along Loop 289. Merritt-Voels was traveling at around 90 miles an hour.

An officer with Lubbock Police, who wasn't identified, managed to stop the speeding vehicle by letting it collide into the back of his patrol vehicle.

KAMC News reports that the officer made the decision because of multiple vehicles that were ahead of him. He was traveling with Merritt-Voels in the 2500 block of North Loop 289 when he saw that multiple vehicles ahead had failed to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle. Due to there being no way around the vehicles, he decided to try and stop Merritt-Voels by letting him collide with the patrol vehicle.

Merritt-Voels lost control of his vehicle after the collision, rolled and came to a stop in the field. He was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

The officer's vehicle hit another vehicle on the road, and that driver also suffered minor injuries. The officer was uninjured.
