Mason Montgomery Waved Goodbye to All-Tournament Team First Baseman
Texas Tech baseball swept through the NCAA Lubbock Regional in three straight games and the 2021 Lubbock Regional All-Tournament Team reflected that. The Red Raiders ran through Army, North Carolina, and UCLA on their way to the undefeated regional.
Texas Tech will move on to host the winner of the Palo Alto Regional which will be either the Stanford Cardinal or the UC Irvine Anteaters who will play a decisive final game tonight, June 6th, for all the marbles.
Back to the Lubbock regional, Mr. June, Kurt Wilson was named the MVP of the weekend after returning from his broken thumb to hit .455 and knock in 5 RBI. No big deal. He also played a credible center field after not spending any time there before his injury.
Joining Wilson on the All-Tournament team were catcher Braxton Fulford, 2nd baseman Jace Jung, right fielder Easton Murrell, designated hitter Cole Stilwell, and reliever Ryan Sublette.
Those six nominations led all four teams who appeared with UCLA getting four on the team and North Carolina snagging one, leaving Army West Point off the team after going 0-2 in the regional.
JT Schwartz was the first baseman of the All-Tournament team and had my favorite performance of the weekend when he struck out three times against Mason Montgomery, twice looking, and had the audacity to argue with the umpire. Even the announcers were saying that the umpires should defer to Schwartz because he know's what is a strike and what isn't one.
Well, you know what is a strike? The one the umpire calls and he rang up Schwartz looking on consecutive at-bats after Mason Montgomery painted the corner. Montgomery kindly let Schwartz know how many times he'd been struck out today.
I digress, here is the entire All-Tournament team including six Red Raiders and UCLA's Mr. Schwartz among others.
