Monterey defeated North Crowley Friday evening 46-42 in Round 2 of Class 5-A Girls High School Playoff Basketball.

North Crowley took early control of the match-up jumping out to a 6-0 lead to start the contest. North Crowley was leading the Lady Plainsmen 16-1 at one point in the first quarter.

In fact Monterey didn’t score their first field goal of the game till 1:26 left in the first, cutting the Lady Plainsmen’s deficit to 16-3.

Turnovers were the storyline of the Lady Plainsmen’s first half struggles as they committed 11-overall by halftime, with 8 in the first quarter alone.

Texas A&M commit Chelsea Johnson paced North Crowley in the first half scoring 21 of the team’s 28 points.

North Crowley had a 14-point cushion, 28-14, over the Lady Plainsmen when the two teams broke for half-time. The Lady Plainsmen were just 2-4 from the free-throw line at the half, compared to North Crowley at 8-11.

The Lady Plainsman continually chipped away at the opposition’s led in the third quarter, while holding North Crowley to just one basket. By the end of the third quarter the Lady Plainsmen had cut the lead to 34-29.

Monterey continued to play strong defense before eventually knotting the game up at 34 with 6:18 left in the fourth.

The Lady Plainsmen took their first lead of the game with 5:48 left in the contest at 36-34 and never looked back. Monterey’s largest lead of the game was 7-points.

The Lady Plainsmen were led offensively by Texas Tech commit Kellyn Schneider and Kierra Tubs who both scored 12 points.

The Lady Plainsmen will now face the Lady Mustangs of Coronado Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center at LCU.
