FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota Twins reliever Joel Zumaya says he is considering retirement after learning that he has a season-ending torn ligament in his pitching elbow.

If he wants to return to baseball, he'll need Tommy John surgery. That would be the right-hander's sixth operation since 2006.

Zumaya hasn't pitched in a game since breaking his right elbow in June of 2010.

Also from spring training, Boston Red Sox catcher and captain Jason Varitek has decided to retire and is expected to announce his decision Thursday. Varitek spent his entire major league career with the Bosox, catching four no-hitters, winning two World Series, capturing a Gold Glove and being named to three All-Star games.

Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish will make his first spring training start March 7 against San Diego in Peoria, Ariz. Darvish, who has led the Japanese League in strikeouts and ERA the past two seasons, threw 34 pitches to two minor leaguers in batting practice Monday.

Pitchers Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland are among 13 players who have agreed to 2012 contracts with the Rangers. Feliz and Holland each accepted deals worth a shade over $500,000.

Athletics third baseman Scott Sizemore will miss the entire 2012 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee Sunday during Oakland's first full-squad workout.

The Reds have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with set-up man Sean Marshall, who was acquired from the Cubs for three prospects in December. General manager Walt Jocketty says the contract extension puts the 29-year-old Marshall in line to become the closer if that role opens up eventually.

Eric Chavez and the New York Yankees have finalized a $900,000, one-year contract that allows the backup infielder to earn $3.05 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances.
