Making the Elderly Part of Your Holidays
For most of us, the holiday season is a joyous time for friends and family. But what about those friends and family who are in nursing homes during this time?
I've had loved ones in this situation, and sometimes the smallest things matter to them and to you.
There are a number of ways to include them in the holidays and make them feel like part of the fun:
- Bring the holiday fun to them. If allowed, put up a small tree or other holiday decorations to brighten their spaces up.
- Send cards to the person, something as simple as a card can help those folks feel remembered this time of year.
- Bring movies and holiday activities, along with some fun snacks to watch with your loved one.
Most importantly, don't wear them out. Elderly folks tend to tire easily, and even 15 or 20 minutes might be too much for them. So be aware of things like that.
The whole point is to include them in what you do, they will appreciate it, and you might just make some new memories. Remember: they won't be around forever, so enjoy the time you can spend with them.
