Do you remember when the Lubbock Jaycees had a haunted house on the Fairgrounds?

Apparently, it was a thing across the country for members of the service organization The Jaycees to run haunted houses. Ours had one at the fairgrounds.

I'm going to tell you right now that the haunted house when I went was mostly sheets with glow-in-the-dark/phosphorescent paint splashed on it. I don't even think the outside looked any different than the buildings at the fairgrounds do now. It didn't matter. The Lubbock Jayeees were well-trained little ghouls and they scared the hell out of me. I distinctly remember someone jumping out in front of me and somehow I grabbed my buddy and yeeted him towards the scare actor.

That's the thing with haunted houses: if you let your mind go to work on you, you're screwed. Back in 1979-80 when I visited, we didn't have the overexposure to stuff that we did now. We did not know where to expect the jump scares, and we also didn't know if a serial killer had slipped into the haunted house along with the Jaycees and was really trying to murder us.

I don't remember much else about the experience except it was pretty short -- something like five to eight minutes. At the time, that was more than enough to create an impression on me.

I do not know why they quit doing that haunted house or even if we have Jaycees are in town anymore, but I do want to thank the ones that moved over to the Lubbock Lions for such a fun, memorable experience.
